This Privacy Policy explains how James Thiessen (“we”, “us”, or “our”) handles information in connection with the Mandarin Flashcards mobile application (the “App”). We have designed the App to keep your learning data on your device and to limit data collection to what is needed to display advertising.
By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
On iOS, we ask for your permission (App Tracking Transparency) before any data is used to track you. On Android, the equivalent identifier is the Google Advertising ID, which you can reset or delete in your device settings. On both platforms, in the EEA/UK we present a consent form before ads load.
The App stores the following locally on your device and does not transmit it to us:
This data remains under your control and is removed if you delete the App or reset it from within the App.
The App uses Google AdMob to show banner ads. AdMob is provided by Google, which acts as an independent third party. Through the Google Mobile Ads SDK, Google may collect and process the following:
| Data type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Device / advertising identifier (IDFA on iOS, Google Advertising ID on Android) | Serving and measuring ads, frequency capping |
| Advertising data and product interaction (e.g. ad views, taps) | Serving and measuring ads, analytics |
| Coarse (approximate) location | Serving and measuring ads, analytics |
| Diagnostics (crash and performance data) | App functionality and analytics |
Some of this data may be used for tracking — that is, linked with third-party data for the purpose of personalized advertising — depending on your consent and tracking choices (see Sections 5 and 6).
We do not collect your name, email address, contacts, photos, precise location, or account credentials.
For details on how Google uses this information, see:
Advertising data is used to:
We do not sell your personal information.
On iOS, before any data is used to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies, the App presents Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt. If you do not grant permission, the App requests non-personalized ads only. You can change your choice at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
On Android, the Google Mobile Ads SDK uses the Google Advertising ID, a resettable identifier managed by the operating system rather than by us. You can reset it, or delete it entirely so that apps receive no advertising ID at all, in Settings → Privacy → Ads (the exact path varies by manufacturer and Android version). Android has no equivalent of the ATT prompt; the consent form described in Section 6 applies on both platforms.
For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, the App uses Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP) to present a consent form before ads are requested, consistent with the GDPR and ePrivacy requirements. You may grant or decline consent for personalized advertising, and you can change your consent choices within the App.
Where we rely on consent as the legal basis, you may withdraw it at any time. Where permitted, we also rely on legitimate interests to show non-personalized ads that fund the App.
The optional Remove Ads subscription is processed by Apple through the App Store on iOS, and by Google through Google Play on Android. We do not receive or store your payment details. The App receives only whether an active entitlement exists, which it caches on your device so ads stay off when you are offline. Apple’s and Google’s handling of your purchase is governed by their own privacy policies.
On-device data is retained until you delete it within the App or remove the App. On Android, your progress may also be included in Android Auto Backup — an operating-system feature that stores app data in your own Google account so it can be restored to a new device. That backup is controlled by your Google account settings, not by us, and we have no access to it. Advertising data collected by Google is retained and handled according to Google’s own retention policies, linked above.
The App is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
We use reasonable technical measures to protect information. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
The App is operated from Canada. If you use the App from another country, advertising data processed by Google may be transferred to and processed in countries with different data-protection laws, subject to Google’s safeguards.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
